COTTONWOOD FALLS — The Yates Center golf team got some valuable experience playing a sand-greens course on Thursday as they prepare for regionals and the state tournament for high school sand-greens golf.
The team went to Cottonwood Falls — which will host regionals in May — for a triangular meet with Chase County and Riley County. The Wildcats finished second behind host-school Chase County.
Reece Solander was the top Wildcat finisher with a runner-up mark at 73, after going one under for a 32 on the back nine. He was two shots off the lead.
Remi Wagner shot an 84 to take seventh while Jon Barnes finished ninth with an 88 and James Hess’ 101 earned him 11th.
“Their scores were some of the lowest of their careers, if not the lowest, and most of them shot much better on the back nine as they became more familiar with the course,” Wildcat coach Kevin Barnes said. “This gives me a good feeling about our regional tournament, which will be here in about three weeks.”
Krais Baker represented the Wildcats junior varsity and shot a nine-hole score of 70 to tie for 10th in the junior varsity portion.
