Soggy grounds greeted golfers from Marmaton Valley, Humboldt and Yates Center high schools Thursday. IN JUNIOR VARSITY action, Frontenac’s John Brooks carded the best nine-hole round of the day with a 45, two shots better than teammate Christian Crawford. Frontenac also won the team score with a 194.
The Marmaton Valley Invitational, hosted at Iola’s Cedarbrook Golf Course, had been postponed once previously because of wet weather. Another round of storms earlier this week threatened to wash away Thursday’s competition before a day and a half of dry weather — about as much as sports fans apparently can hope for this spring — allowed the course to dry somewhat.
So the golfers played, even with some puddles still dotting a number of fairways on the nine-hole course.
In the end, Jayhawk-Linn’s Reece Dawson emerged on top of Humboldt’s Robbie Sellman by two strokes. Dawson scored an 82 for the top individual medal; Sellman an 84.
Dawson spearheaded Jayhawk-Linn’s team championship score of 359, well ahead of Chetopa’s 390, Oswego’s 391 and Humboldt’s 407. Marmaton Valley carded a 429 for fifth.
With only one golfer, Nick Schemper, Yates Center did not qualify for team standings.
Others playing for Humboldt were Rhett Smith in seventh with a 93, Tanner Porter in 26th with a 112 and Conner Rosenberry in 27th with a 118.
Mike Swift scored the best round of the day for the host Wildcats, with a 97, which tied him for 11th. One shot behind was 13th-place finisher Lane Hamm’s 98. Mitch Covey scored 111, good for 25th, while Joe Jefferis had a 123, placing him 31st.
Schemper carded a 103, good for 15th.
Humboldt, Marmaton Valley and Yates Center each entered two golfers in the JV competition.
Porter carded a 56, good for 13th, while Rosenberry finished in 22nd with a 62.
Jacob Schaffer carded a 63 for Marmaton Valley, finishing 25th. Payton Wilson scored a 65, good for 26th.
Derrick Heslop scored a 62 for Yates Center, finishing in 24th. Eric Updegrove took 30th with an 82.
