Sullivan takes second at 160

SILVER LAKE — Iola High’s Marcus Sullivan, Stephen McDonald and Mike Armstrong faced Kansas Class 4A-ranked opponents in their individual weight classes at Saturday’s Silver Lake High Invitational wrestling tournament.
“We faced some good competition in this tournament, which will only help us for the upcoming regional tournament (Feb. 18),” said Ron Schomaker, Iola head coach.
Sullivan, who finished third in the tournament a year ago, was pinned by fourth-ranked Rory Haug of St. James Academy in the 160-pound championship match. It was only Sullivan’s second loss of the season.
Sullivan won by injury default over Wehner of Rossville in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Sullivan posted an 11-2 win over Aaron Cool of Topeka-Seaman.
McDonald finished fifth in the 189-pound class, which featured the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked wrestlers in 4A. McDonald defeated Brady Munsch of Salina South 6-4 for fifth.
After a first-round bye, McDonald pinned Logan Anderson of Chase County. That pitted him against top-ranked and undefeated Zach Anderson of Clay Center. Z. Anderson pinned  McDonald then McDonald was pinned by Billy Teters of Prairie View.
Second-ranked Zack Grimes of Osawatomie upended Z. Anderson 6-3 in the 189-pound title match.
Armstrong finished sixth in the 119-pound class. He lost 7-6 to Josh Schroeder of Silver Lake in the fifth-place match.
Armstrong lost to top-ranked Austin Hood of Louisburg 18-1, dropping into the consolation bracket. He defeated Brian Lee of Leavenworth 9-0 then dropped a 10-0 decision to fifth-ranked Jace Roy of Prairie View. He won by injury default over Zach Pittman of Seaman.
Lee Berg went 1-2 in the 130-pound class. He was pinned by Gabby Speer of Doniphan West, pinned Sam Mizell of Seaman and was pinned by Terry Dankenbring of Rossville.
At 135, Brent Clark lost by falls to Jade Kolterman of Clay Center and Cooper Ratty of Prairie View.
In the 152-pound class, Devin Culler lost 9-8 to Kurt Weaver of Paola then he pinned Howser of Silver Lake and lost 7-0 to Aaron Halling of Doniphan West.
Iola’s 171-pounder, Drew Shepherd opened with a pin of Dalton Morgan of Silver Lake. Shepherd was pinned by Tyler Henness of Paola then by Tyler Daniels of Osawatomie.
Iola had seven wrestlers competing in the Silver Lake junior varsity tournament Saturday. Those results will be in Tuesday’s Register.
The Mustangs are set to hold a makeup home dual with Osawatomie Tuesday. It is parents’ night for the Mustangs starting at 5:15 p.m.
Iola goes to Independence for a Southeast Kansas League double dual with Coffeyville on Thursday.
