HARTFORD — Solid play on both sides of the line of scrimmage spelled victory Friday night for Southern Coffey County High.
The Titans allows host Hartford High only four first downs and less than 100 yards of total offense in a 30-12 win.
The victory evens Southern Coffey County’s record at 2-2.
Titan head coach John Chanley was particularly pleased with his team’s defensive effort.
“Our kids did a lot better job of firing off the line of scrimmage,” Chanley said. “They kept up their effort all four quarters.”
A methodical offense, meanwhile, chewed up the clock, which eventually turned into points.
The Titans led 24-0 by the end of the third quarter, on the heels of a 32-yard touchdown run by Travis Bryan in the first quarter, 15-yard run by Aaron Ludolph in the second and a 60-yard touchdown run by Colin Kraft in the third, plus a safety in which Callahan, Scott Fischer and Ludolph combined on a quarterback sack in the Jaguar end zone.
The Titans’ only defensive breakdowns came early in the fourth quarter as Hartford scored twice in a 2:27 span.
But Southern Coffey County held from there and iced the game with a four-yard touchdown run by Dylan Wonser in the game’s waning seconds.
A balanced rushing attack paced the Titans: Wonser rushed 19 times for 55 yards, Bryan had nine totes for 50 and Kraft earned 45 yards on 12 carries.
Kraft completed 7 of 17 passes for for 73 yards. Wes Callahan connected on 1 of 2 passes for three yards. Bryan had four receptions for 52 yards, Ludolph two for 19.
Kraft had 10 tackles, Callahan had nine, Bryan and Scott Fischer had eight apiece and Ryan True had seven. Wonser recovered a fumble and Charlie Patterson intercepted a Jaguar pass.
Southern Coffey County starts up district play next Friday at home against Marais Des Cygnes Valley.
