Getting the word out is important for those involved in the inaugural National Wild Turkey Federation’s Kansas First Upland Pioneers Chapter.
Bob Walden, Don Erbert, John Brocker and others manned a booth at Saturday’s Iola Farm-City Days. They talked up the new organization’s mission — focus on developing upland gamebird and wildlife habitat — and the chapter’s banquet and auction.
Joining local members of the chapter Saturday was Ellen Benitz, NWTF regional director. The group answered questions and promoted membership in the chapter.
Also, they advertised the chapter’s inaugural banquet and art auction Saturday, Oct. 30. The event is at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Piqua.
There will be live and silent auctions featuring wildlife prints and items, as well as drawings for outdoor gear.
Doors open at 5 p.m. The banquet begins at 6:30 p.m. with the auction to follow.
Contact Bob Walden at 620-365-1780 or John Brocker at 620-365-1672 for more information and tickets.
NWTF Regional Wildlife Biologist Roger Wells will give a short presentation on habitat management for bobwhite quail in southeast Kansas.
The Kansas First Upland Pioneers Chapter was created in Iola in August  by more than two dozen conservation-minded individuals who decided the best way to improve quail populations and upland habitat was to form the NWTF chapter focused on upland gamebirds.
“It’s about keeping and developing wildlife habitat. Not just about turkeys but all wildlife,” Walden said.
Habitat improved to benefit the wild turkey also helps a huge range of other wildlife, such as quail, grouse, woodcock, deer and numerous other game and non-game species.
“We believe the NWTF is the most effective conservation organization in North America and our chapter could not ask for a better partner in our efforts to improve quail and upland habitat in Kansas,” said Walden, who was named president and banquet chairman of the Kansas First Upland Pioneers Chapter.  “We are excited to join such a fantastic group.”
