The nominations are in for the May Allen County Area Athlete of the Month and picking the right candidate may seem more difficult than usual as each of the nominees completed his or her athletic year on the state’s grandest stage. Cast your ballot here. Voting ends June 11.

Humboldt High School had two athletes nominated for the honor, including freshman golfer Connor Newman and senior pitcher Logan Page.

Newman has been a topic of conversations on the links since making his high school debut in Caney Valley in March and after multiple tournament titles he culminated his year with second place at the state tournament in Garden City.

Facing wet conditions, Newman carded a 4 over par 76 on the 18-hole course. Despite finishing the second round five strokes higher than his opening round, he tied for the lowest round on the day.

Page recently was selected to play on the Kansas All-State First Team. As the Cubs’ ace this season, he played a vital role in their victory over neighboring rival Iola with 15 strikeouts over seven innings in a 10-inning nail-biter.

Page came up for the Cubs again in the state tournament opener as he tallied five strikeouts over five innings.

Brayden Lawson, a Marmaton Valley High School senior, throws the javelin.

Lawson made the medal podium while competing at the state track and field meet at Wichita State University’s  Cessna Stadium last Friday.

Lawson took fifth place with a top throw of 167 feet, 10 inches.

Lawson qualified for state after taking third at the Iola regional with a 156-foot throw.

FOR THE GIRLS,  Crest discus throw Summer Valentine just completed her freshman year by finishing 14th at the state competition with a top throw of 92 feet, 9 inches.

Valentine qualified for state after taking third at the Iola Regional with a 100’ 10” throw.

Another Crest female receiving an athlete of the month nomination is Crest sophomore long jumper Hannah Schmidt.

Schmidt was atop the state medal podium after taking fourth place in the long jump after sticking a distance of 16’ 18” on the opening day of competition. She also took 13th in the 100-meter hurdles.

Schmidt qualified for state after taking third in long jump at the Iola Regional with a 16’ 8” leap, where she also took the regional title in the hurdles after clearing the course 15.88 seconds.

Jayda Rice, a sophomore at Yates Center High, took 13th in shot put with a 33-foot 4.25-inch mark at the 2A state competition Wichita.

Rice qualified after hitting a 35’ 2” mark at the Eureka Regional for third place.
