GARNETT — Sydney Wade waited four years for her first varsity home run so it was only fitting that she waited a little longer before she realized that her fourth-inning blast in Tuesday’s 3-2 loss at Anderson County had found its way over the fence.
“Honestly, I didn’t even know it was a home run at first, I thought the girl had just dropped it, but after I figured it out, it was pretty sweet,” she said.
The speedy Wade was sprinting around the bases with her mind on a triple or inside-the-park home run after she saw the ball deflect off of the center fielder’s glove at the fence.
“Coach talked to me at third and he said, ‘Slow down, it’s a home run,’ so I got to soak it in from third to home,” Wade said.
Wade’s long ball was the first run of the game for either side and Iola added one in the fifth inning when a Madisyn Holloway hit scored freshman Gabby Richards.
“Kelsey (Morrison) and Gabby are definitely stepping up,” Iola coach Chris Weide said. “They are comfortable at the plate and they get good swings on the ball.”
In the sixth inning, the game flipped on an extremely rare error by third baseman Chloe Gardner when she overthrew first baseman Riley Murry and allowed a runner to reach.
