Iola High’s softball team was down 9-0 against Wellsville before the team got a chance to bat.
After rain postponed the doubleheader with Wellsville last Tuesday, the game started in the second inning with the Eagles leading 5-0. They added four more runs before the inning was over.
“They’re a good team,” coach Melissa Stiffler said. “They’ve got depth through the lineup from 1-9 that can cream the ball. We knew they were going to hit the ball well. It seemed like every gap out there, they found.”
The score only got worse from that point forward. Wellsville shutout Iola in a three-inning game, winning 20-0.
Iola had three hits in the game. Shelby Reno, Chloe Gardner and Taylor Heslop each had a single.
Iola’s offense didn’t get much better in game two, but they did get on the scoreboard. Iola lost 21-3.
Iola scored two runs in the fourth inning. Jadyn Sigg walked and Katie Shields hit her in on a single. Micaiah Larney had an RBI-single later in the inning. In the fifth inning, Iola scored one more run. After Baylea Thompson hit a single, Katelynn Olsten pinch-ran for her. She came into score on an error during Sydney Wade’s at-bat.
To Wellsville’s credit, they also had good pitching to go with their bats.
“They had four good pitchers,” Stiffler said. “I kept thinking, ‘my gosh, how many more does he have on the bench?’ The first two were studs and the next two weren’t bad either. They’re tough.”
Iola (4-10) will have another challenge at Santa Fe Trail today.
“We’ve got another tough couple of games tomorrow,” Stiffler said Monday night. “I think [Santa Fe Trail] actually played [Wellsville] pretty close.”
