HUMBOLDT —  As temperatures start to heat up, so does the racing action at Humboldt Speedway.
Friday’s Whelen All-American Modifieds showcased an instant classic at the “Hummer.”
Pole sitter, and winner of seven features, Mitch Keeter, was involved in a first-lap incident that sent himself and Tad Davis to the rear. Wichita’s Tanner Mullens inherited the pole and led 18 action-filled laps. With two to go, Tuscon, Ariz., driver RC Whitwell rocketed into the lead with a wall-bouncing move that brought the fans to their feet. Whitwell held off Mullens on the final lap for the win. Whitwell’s teammate Tyler Wolf, Mitch Keeter and Cody Schniepp completed the top five. Heat race wins went to Whitwell and Keeter.
In Fastshafts by Axle Exchange Street Stock action, Jay Lamons shook off the prior week’s mechanical issues and used his front row starting position to his advantage in picking up the win. Lamons waited patiently to pass pole sitter Ethan Lamons, last week’s winner, for his seventh win of the year. The battle for second ended with Lamons edging out Brad Jarman, Rusty Etherton and Shane Cook. Heat race wins went to both Ethan and Jay Lamons.
Last week, Shane Collins battled hard for a third place finish. This week, in Ray’s Metal Depot B Modified action, Collins blasted from his pole position and led every lap in picking up his first victory this year. Tyler Kidwell, Cody Jolly, Brian Bolin and Tim VanGotten rounded out the top
five. Heat race wins went to Jolly, Collins and Ottawa’s Jeremy Bennett.
In preparation for next week’s $600 to win Factory Stock race, Chanute’s Jacob Ellison threw his hat into the ring as a possible car to beat. Ellison methodically chased down and passed Humboldt’s Wayne Johnson to take the checkered flag. Johnson, Dereck Wilson, Joey Decoster and Jon Westhoff rounded out the top five.
In Sport Compact action. St. Joseph, Mo., driver John Willard racked up his eighth win and of the season in dominating fashion. Grandview’s Jim Witt, in his first competition at Humboldt Speedway, picked up second while Topeka’s Barry Luthi rounded out the top three. Luthi picked up the heat race win.
In races as old as the track itself, the annual Kid’s Bicycle race held at
intermission introduced fans to the next generation of possible racers at
Humboldt Speedway. Competing in three different age groups and distances
the results were as follows: Six and Under: 1. Matthew Clounch, 2. Jacey Baker, 3. Carson Allen. Ages 7-9:  1. Bryson Felton, 2. Luke McGowen, 3. Noah Gawlas. Ages 10-12: 1. Jackson McGowen,  2. Austin Roberts.

THIS Friday, the Factory Stock division will hold a $600-to-win feature with all
other divisions competing for points.
