MORAN — Defense turned the tables for Marmaton Valley High’s boys.
“We had seven boys play, and all seven did a great job on defense,” Wildcat head coach Denny Lasley said.
The defense helped turn an early deficit into a 37-35 win in the second round of Marmaton Valley’s preseason tournament.
On the girls’ side, the Wildcats could not overcome a cold shooting night at the free throw line and an even worse second quarter in a 42-34 loss.
Both teams will wrap up tournament play tonight at home against McLouth.
The Wildcat boys (1-2) trailed by as many as 12 before ending the game on a 14-4 run.
“We hit several clutch free throws, including two by Dalton Houk in the fourth quarter, and Landon Hammond and Gage Stewart drew a couple of crucial charges for us,” Lasley said.
Zach Louk scored 10 points with four steals, while Cole Becker had eight points, four steals and five assists. Hammond had nine rebounds and Tanner Lewis had four steals.
Austin Bogina scored 10 to lead Northeast.
MARMATON Valley’s girls trailed by as much as 25 before mounting a furious comeback that came up just short.
“The girls showed some guts,” Wildcat head coach Kent Houk said. “They kept scrapping.”
Marmaton Valley (0-3) hit only 6 of 19 free throws in the loss.
Maggie Meiwes scored 10 points to lead the Wildcats, followed by Morgan Henry and Cheyanne Miller with eight points apiece.
Lina Hensley had the hot hand for Northeast, draining four three-pointers en route to a game-high 16 points. Britney Clark added 12.
