YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s girls were able to finish what they started — literally — Tuesday evening.
The Wildcats, nursing a one-point lead after three quarters against visiting West Elk High, closed the game with a 19-9 run to win 54-43.
The victory lifts Yates Center’s record to 5-6 on the season.
The key, according to Wildcat head coach Abbie Collins, was her team’s ability to finish its shots, particularly in the fourth quarter.
Collins pointed to junior Cherokee Shaffer, who scored a game-high 14 points, with eight rebounds and five steals.
“She was able to get some rebounds, which led her to be able to finish shots,” Collins said.
Yates Center led 11-5 after one quarter before West Elk closed the half with a 13-7 run to knot the score at 18-18. Yates Center led 35-34 after three quarters before its clinching run.
“We played much better on defense tonight,” Collins said.
Jessica Hartwig added 11 points, while Kassy Rey-nolds scored 10 for the Wildcats.
Drew Spencer added five steals and four assists.
Courtney Ivey led the Patriots with 10 points.
Yates Center also won the junior varsity contest 44-21. Blake Crossfield and Brae Adams each scored 12 points to pace the Wildcat JV.
Yates Center travels to Humboldt Thursday in a game postponed from Jan. 6 due to snowy weather.
