FREDONIA — Iola High’s Fillies have never had a girl devoted to the pole vault. That is until Maggie Wilson came along two years ago.
Wilson is following in her father’s footsteps. Larry Wilson, now coaching for IHS track, is second on the Mustang pole vault honor roll.
Wilson reached 10 feet, 6 inches, a new Fillies’ pole vault mark, as a freshman. Last Friday at the Fredonia High Relays, Wilson increased her own IHS school mark by a foot.
Wilson won the pole vault with a clearance of 11’6”. She then won the 100-meter dash and ran the lead-off leg of the winning 4×100-meter relay for the Fillies.
The Fillies claimed six gold medals in the track meet.
“Where we are good, we are very good,” said Marvin Smith, Iola High head track coach. “We didn’t enter seven events and finished third as a team.”
Smith said because of computer problems, he was unable to give all times and marks for the Iola athletes.
Kendra Taiclet, a sophomore, won the 100-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. She combined with Wilson, Kelsey Larson and Jazmyne Honecutt to win the 4×100-meter relay in 52.1 seconds.
Smith said the Fillies were missing two regular runners from the 4×800-meter relay team.
“Kelsey filled in and gave us a good lead and Sydney Owens lengthened it. Breanna Stout kept the distance and Chanel Coyne, running her first 800 meters ever, held off Girard’s anchor to win in a photo finish.” Smith said.
Larson, Owens, Stout and Coyne earned gold in the 4×800-meter relay race. Wilson, Larson, Taiclet and Coyne combined for third place in the 4×400-meter relay race.
Honeycutt was second in the 100-meter dash while Larson ran 27.3 seconds to take silver in the 200-meter dash.
Katlyn Cleaver was third in both the shot put and discus. Kirstin McGuffin took third in the javelin.
The Fillies’ varsity goes to Osawatomie Thursday.
