PITTSBURG — Yates Center High’s girls had little answer for a withering Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan press Tuesday.
The host Panthers outscored Yates Center 21-5 in the second quarter alone to roll to a 53-16 victory.
The loss, coming in the first round of the Class 2A substate playoffs, ends the Wildcat girls’ season at 1-20.
Yates Center was within 9-4 after one quarter before Colgan took full control with a variety of steals, layups and 3-pointers.
Colgan scored the first 17 points of the second period to lead 26-4.
The Panthers outscored Yates Center 19-2 in the third quarter to lead 49-11, triggering a running clock over the final eight minutes.
The victory puts Colgan in Friday’s substate semifinals. The Panthers (19-2) advance to take on Oswego (6-15), which defeated Uniontown 32-27 in their quarterfinal matchup.
