CHETOPA — There were a few too many missed shots for their liking, but Yates Center High’s 28-15 victory over Chetopa Monday gave the Wildcat girls their third win in their past six games.
“We played really well defensively,” Yates Center head coach Kevin Brown said.
Yates Center allowed no more than five points in any quarter, he noted.
And while the Wildcats also ran their offense well against Chetopa’s zone defense, “we missed 13 layups,” Brown said. “It wasn’t a pretty game, but we were excited to get the win.”
Kinley Morrison and Peyton Petit provided the one-two punch to lift Yates Center’s offense.
Morrison scored 10 points over the first two quarters as Yates Center pulled ahead, 15-7, by the break.
Petit picked up the scoring baton after intermission, scoring all nine of her points over the third and fourth quarters.
Morrison wound up with 14 to lead the way.
Isabella Nash scored six for Chetopa.
Both teams struggled from the free throw line. Yates Center drained 10 of 24 opportunities at the line; the Hornets hit 4 of 13.
Yates Center’s boys also picked up a victory without having to lace up a sneaker.
A numbers crunch at Chetopa prompted the Hornet boys team to forfeit Monday’s contest.
Yates Center traveled to Altoona-Midway Tuesday — results were unavailable by deadline — and will play at Crest Friday. The regular season concludes next Tuesday at home against Humboldt.
