Yates Center girls sweep past Eureka

YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s Wildcats powered past visiting Eureka High’s Tornadoes 18-3 in the first of two games Thursday. The Cats used an 18-hit attack to overwhelm the Tornadoes in just three innings.
Yates Center controlled the second game from the outset but it went seven innings. The Wildcats won 6-4 to sweep their Tri-Valley League opening doubleheader.
Yates Center improved to 3-1 on the season. It hosts Neodesha Monday in league play.
Yates Center goes to Moran Friday for a doubleheader with Marmaton Valley. The games were originally scheduled for April 12.
Daryean Estes tossed a three-hitter in the opening game. She had two strikeouts.
Maggie German cranked out two doubles and a single to lead the Cat offense. Drew Spencer and Autumn Douglas each had a double and two singles. Kassy Reynolds doubled twice.
Jessica Hartwig and Shannon Staats had two singles each. Estes and Skyler Clairbourn had a double apiece. Sierra Lenard singled.
Yates Center led 3-1 after the first inning of the second game. The Wildcats were up 6-1 after four innings.
German, Spencer and Reynolds each had three singles. Estes hit two singles. Hitting a single each were Douglas, Lenard and Hartwig.
Estes, with Reynolds behind the plate, allowed six hits and issued three walks. She struck out two.
Yates Center High’s baseball team also played Thursday at home against Eureka, but no report was made to the Register on the boys’ games.
