There wasn’t a lot of tension in Yates Center’s first volleyball tournament of the season on Saturday.
Of their five matches during their home invitational, all were settled in just two sets as the Lady Wildcats finished the day with a 3-2 record.
In their two losses versus Uniontown, 0-2 (21-25, 21-25) and Chetopa, 0-2 (16-26, 20-25) Yates Center was below par, recording eight attack errors and nine service errors between the two matches.
In their wins though, Yates Center’s defense was dominant, allowing only one set where a team scored 20 or more points.
“I’m very pleased on how well we played,” head coach Jennie Davis said. “We competed very strong with each team we played. If we keep playing like this, we should have a good season, and it should be fun to watch.”
The Wildcats beat Northeast, 2-0 (25-18, 25-13) with Allison Pringle leading the attack with three kills to go along with five blocks.
The Lady Wildcats beat St. Paul, 2-0 (25-13, 25-18), with Maria Jimenez recording three kills on 10 attempts.
Pleasanton provided the strongest competiton out of the Lady Wildcats’ wins but still proved to not be a match as Yates Center prevailed 2-0 (25-23, 25-19).
Jimenez and Madelynn Collins both had three kills while Pringle led the way defensively with two blocks.
Yates Center will have a  little over a week to rest before they head to Uniontown a week from today.
