EUREKA — Yates Center High’s track and field athletes brought home several top medals Thursday from the Eureka Invitational.
Leading the way were the Wildcat girls’ 4×100-meter relay team of Rylie Albert, Paige Steinforth, Ashley Pringle and Mindi Holloway, with a winning time of 54.13 seconds.
In addition, Steinforth took the silver medal on the girls’ side, clearing 4 feet 10 inches in the high jump, while the Wildcat girls’ 4×400-meter relay team of Steinforth, Pringle, Katelyn Hatch and Holloway nabbed third with a time of 4: 32.
Hatch took fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at 54.3 seconds.
On the boys’ side, Drake Busteed was second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:02, while Ceaton Cooper took second in the 400-meter dash at 52.9 seconds. Brett Holloway was fifth in the 1600 at 5:17. Caleb DeNoon took fourth in the long jump, going 18’8”. Busteed was sixth in the high jump at 5’6”. His mark was tied with Myles Dice, but Busteed got sixth through a tie-breaker.
“Both teams did quite well for a first meet where we were outnumbered in all events,” Yates Center coach Dan Berg said. “There was a 4A school, and most of our league schools are all 3A schools, but our relays did well as well as some of our individual performers.
“Training has been spotty because of our late winter,” he continued, “so we feel we are at a good place for this time of the year.”
For example, Austin McNett improved his personal-best javelin throw by 18 feet, Berg said.
“And some of our times were equal to where we were at the end of last season,” he said.
The Wildcats have a busy week ahead. They travel to Lyndon Monday, then host a meet Tuesday.
