Grand jury into Kobach’s office won’t start soon

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Court procedures are likely to delay a Douglas County grand jury investigation into Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s office until well after the fall election.

A Lawrence man, Steven Davis, who gathered enough signatures to force the investigation, contends Kobach’s office didn’t register some people who tried to register online. Kobach denies that claim.

The Kansas Supreme Court last week declined to consider the issue, meaning an appeals court ruling approving the grand jury stands.

Supreme Court spokeswoman Lisa Taylor says it would be late this month before the appeals court sends a mandate to the Douglas County District Court ordering a grand jury be convened.

Kansas Public Radio reports after county court receives the order, the process of alerting potential jurors will begin. That process typically takes months.

Crest volleyball falls in triangular

ARMA —  Crest volleyball hit a snag Thursday night in its triangular versus Northeast-Arma and Liberal (Mo.).

The Lady Lancers were swept 25-11 and 25-18 to the host Lady Vikings. Senior Cassie Bowen led the team with four kills and senior Camryn Strickler led Crest with six digs. Sophomore Aubree Holloran led serve-receive passing.

The Lady Lancers looked better in their match versus Liberal but still suffered a sweep 25-21 and 26-24.

Bowen had five kills to go along with 100 percent serving and freshmen Lindsey Godderz and Anna Hermreck each had 100 percents serving to go along with two aces for Godderz.

Holloran led the team in digs and senior Breyann Benjamin led the team in serve-receive passing.

The Lady Lancers will return to Arma Tuesday.

Mustang XC first, Fillies second at Fort Scott

HS XC: Iola Mustangs

FORT SCOTT — After last week’s season opener at Garnett was canceled due to weather, the Iola cross country team rebounded a week late in style, winning three out of their four races and finishing second in the fourth.

The Iola boys varsity and junior varsity and girls junior varsity started the season on top while the varsity girls finished second against a tough and experienced Fort Scott team that finished third overall at state last season.

The Iola varsity boys claimed six medals after placing six of their seven runners in the top 15, led by sophomore Jack Adams who finished third with a time of 18 minutes, 14 seconds, and senior Cole Regehr who finished fourth with a time of 18:33.

Freshman Trenton Varney (19:32) and sophomore Riley Jay (19:34) finished ninth and 10th and seniors Elijah Fawson (19:50) and Bret Plumlee (19:54) finished 13th and 15th.

“This is a tough course,” head coach Marv Smith said. “It’s not horribly hilly but it does have both uphill and downhill switchbacks. Taking six of the top 15 places was very satisfying.”

For the varsity girls, four of the top seven finished in the top 15 led by junior Elka Billings (21:43) and her freshman sister Ursula (23:38) who finished in third and eighth, respectively.

“I’m never surprised at what Elka is able to do but her little sister was equally impressive,” Smith said. “She finished 9 seconds behind a Jayhawk-Linn runner who had a super season last year. Both Billings sisters were on Iola’s swim team and I followed their results all summer. This makes me want to get everyone, boys and girls, on the swim team.”

Rachel Bycroft finished 11th with a time of 23:44 followed by Kelsey Morrison (25:03) in 15th to round out the Fillies medalists.

On the junior varsity side of things, the Fillies’ top five finished three through seven led by Averie Sharon in third (25:28), Josie Plum-lee in fourth (26:04), Elanie Sturgeon in fifth (26:04), Audrey Coltrane in sixth (26:16) and Lorie Carpenter (27:14).

“The girls’ team runs 12 deep with very good runners,” Smith said. “That means that the overflow from varsity (limited to seven runners) should expect some dominating JV races.”

The junior varsity boys finished nearly 30 points ahead of number two Fort Scott and had three medalists led by Tavon Bass at second (20:14), Brett Morrison at six (21:22) and Landon Carson at 15th (22:52).

Junior Cal Leonard possibly would’ve ended up with a top 15 finish after winning the JV Fort Scott race last season but was shut down early in the race due to nagging preseason injuries.

The Mustangs and Fillies will try to keep the dominance rolling next Thursday when they head to Parsons.

Fillies tennis third at Indy

High School Tennis: Iola Fillies

INDEPENDENCE — Iola High’s tennis team continued its steady improvement this season on Thursday when the Fillies landed a top-three finish in Independence.

The Fillies went 8-8 on the day which put them behind 12-4 Chanute and 11-5 Independence.

Number one singles player Allie Utley stumbled early in an 8-2 loss to Fort Scott before going go to win her final three matches, earning her a first-place finish.

It didn’t come easily, either. Utley had to battle through tie-break points in both her second and third match of the day to earn the win.

She beat Chanute after a 7-5 tie-break and Independence after an 8-6 tie-break.

Utley rounded things out with an 8-1 win over Pittsburg.

The number one doubles team of Gabby Richards and Carlie Payne went 2-2, beating Fort Scott 8-3 and Pittsburg 8-0 and falling to Chanute 8-3 and Independence 8-5.

The number two doubles team of Kassy and Sidney Shelby also went 2-2. They beat Fort Scott 8-5 and Pittsburg 8-4 and lost to Chanute and Independence 8-1.

Number two singles player Jennifer Tidd went 1-3, getting her lone win versus Fort Scott 8-4 before losing to Chanute and Independence 8-0 and Pittsburg 8-2.

The Fillies will try to keep it going next Thursday in Chanute.

Who’s to blame?

Taylor Swift, kinda-sorta. She has a concert scheduled at the Colts’ Lucas Oil Stadium the weekend of the NFL’s second Sunday. In order to avoid clashing with the Brickyard, the Colts would’ve had to open with two road games. They opted not to do that. If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

Stabbing of candidate shakes Brazil’s presidential race

SAO PAULO (AP) — The stabbing of a leading Brazilian presidential candidate jolted an already wildly unpredictable campaign to lead Latin America’s largest nation, with doctors saying Friday that Jair Bolsonaro will be hospitalized for at least a week.

Supporters of the far-right congressman who wants to crack down on crime said the attack would only boost his chances in next month’s election, but it was unclear when he would be able to return to campaigning in person.

A knife-wielding man whose motive was unknown stabbed Bolsonaro during a rally Thursday in Juiz de Fora, a city about 125 miles north of Rio de Janeiro, as he was being carried on the shoulders of a supporter.

Bolsonaro, 63, suffered intestinal damage and serious internal bleeding, according to Dr. Luiz Henrique Borsato, one of the surgeons who operated on the candidate. He was in serious but stable condition and would remain in intensive care for seven to 10 days, Borsato said.

He was transferred Friday to a premier hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city. Supporters outside the hospital carried a giant inflatable doll of Bolsonaro dressed in a formal suit with a sash that said “President.”

Trump: Ready to tax another $267B in Chinese imports

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Friday that he’s prepared to impose tariffs on an additional $267 billion in Chinese imports. Such a step would significantly escalate his trade war with Beijing and would likely increase costs for a broad range of U.S. businesses and consumers.

Those potential tariffs would come on top of tariffs Trump has said he’s poised to slap on $200 billion worth of goods from China — everything from handbags to bicycle tires. It would also be in addition to tariffs his administration has already imposed on $50 billion in Chinese imports, for which Beijing has retaliated with an equal amount of import taxes on U.S. goods.

“I hate to say this, but behind that there is another $267 billion ready to go on short notice if I want,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One. “That totally changes the equation.”
