Chely Wright, a Nashville recording artist, opened the 106th Allen County Fair Saturday night in Riverside Park before one of the largest crowds ever at a fair country music show. As one of her openers, Iola’s Tasia Cooper-Murphy teamed up with Texan Jeffrey Alan to do country western numbers. Cooper-Murphy recently made her first country western CD. She is better known to Iolans as teacher-manager of the South Street Dance Co.

A capacity crowd of 1,333 filled Humboldt Speedway Saturday evening to watch a demolition derby which capped off a record week of attendance for the Allen County Fair.

 The year 2000 should not cause major failures of Iola utilities and other services, a handful of attendees at a Y2K forum were told. If failures do occur, contingency plans have been made to ensure that all basic services remain in operation.
