Local senior citizens will learn about topics from health and finances to tourism and romance at the Aging With Attitude regional expo Friday, April 27.
The event, which returns to Iola for the second year, targets senior citizens but others who want to learn more about such issues are welcome, said Gayle Price with Southeast Research and Extension Center.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Johns Parish Center, 315 South St., and includes lunch, refreshments, screenings, vendors and two short physical warm-up activies. Four breakout sessions, each about 45 minutes, allow participants to learn about issues important to them. The sessions include topics such as exploring intimacy later in life, places to visit in southeast Kansas, downsizing ones possessions and sharing memories. The expo also will cover health-related topics like Medicare Part D and veterans benefits, physical activity, how diet affects vision and how to prepare meals for one or two.
Keynote speaker is Erin Yelland, assistant professor and extension specialist with K-State Research and Extension, with the topic So Now What? Picking Up the Pieces in Later Life.
This is the eighth year for the expo, which typically draws between 100 to 130 people from 10 counties. Follow-up surveys from past events showed some participants learned health tips and were able to improve their quality of life, Price said. At least two health screenings, including blood pressure checks, are provided.
Those who are interested can register online until Thursday at agingexpo.ksu.edu. Registration fee is $25. Registration is available at the door, although lunch isnt guaranteed. For more information, call Gayle Price at 620-820-6123.
