Thieves hit YC businesses

YATES CENTER — Multiple businesses reported burglaries and some damage was done to property in Yates Center recently, The Yates Center News reported. On Oct. 27, someone pried open a door to Woodson County Prime Meats and cash was taken. The next target was SEK Co-op, where someone threw three large rocks through a window and stole cash and a handful of a specific flavor of beef jerky snack sticks. A third business, Bert’s Tavern, reported theft of some small items.

 

Race revival rescheduled

GARNETT – The rescheduled Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival arrives this weekend, after a deluge of rain postponed the event last month, according to The Anderson County Review. Organizers said only a few entrants had canceled and some events would be compressed because of the loss of an hour of daylight from the change in Daylight Saving Time. The event celebrates the vintage sports cars and competition of the Lake Garnett Grand Prix of the 1960s.

 

City makes it illegal to blow cut grass into street

ERIE — It is now illegal in Erie to blow cut grass onto city streets, The Parsons Sun reported. The Erie City Council approved an ordinance that prohibits the discharge of grass clippings on streets and alleys. A violation brings a fine of $100. An Erie resident told the council that grass on streets is a hazard to motorcyclists and bicyclists, and clogs the stormwater sewer system and street sweeper.

 

County hears about wind power market

ERIE — Neosho County Commissioners heard a presentation on the marketing of electricity as part of discussion of the Neosho Ridge wind generation project, according to The Chanute Tribune. Plans are to connect the wind turbines through a central hub to a Westar-owned line west of Lake Parsons. Generators in Kansas and the area from Texas to South Dakota are part of the Southwest Power Pool grid, a non-profit organization that balances load, demand and prices.

 

School celebrates new fitness center

FREDONIA — Jake Steinfeld, chairman of the National Foundation for the Governor’s Fitness Councils, visited Lincoln Elementary School in Fredonia for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the schools’ new fitness center, according to The Wilson County Citizen. Three schools received $100,000 for a fitness center grant. The Fredonia school submitted a video on perseverance. The fitness centers were constructed over the summer.
