HUMBOLDT — Cody Lassman, coach of the Neosho County Post 170 American Legion team confronted Humboldt USD 258 school board members Monday night with a plea for a place to call home.
Lassman began by explaining why the baseball team, primarily made up of Humboldt teens, is named after the adjoining county.
“That’s simply because we got stuck with time restraints and deadlines we could not make because we did not realize we were going to form this team,” Lassman said. “It was late and we were fortunate enough to get Chanute Post 170 to sponsor us in name only.”
He informed the board of how much the team enjoys playing at the Humboldt complex and said he is trying to figure out what the cost and requirements would be for the field to be its permanent home next year. Lassman also said he intends to submit a team application by Jan. 1, 2018, allowing the team to operate without a Legion sponsor.
“So we would be able to be next year, the Humboldt Cubs.”
Lassman asked for the board members’ backing and support.
“Something like this is not something that we will act on tonight,” President Kevin Heisler said.
He said a decision would be made during a future board meeting.
DRIVER’S education classes started Monday. The classes were delayed from the intended date of last Monday due to Jim Mason having a “slight” heart attack. A note from his physician has released him from a medical hold and allowed him to go back to work.
