Iola won’t have the only competitive races when Allen Countians head to the polls April 5, with several city and school board races to be decided.
Voters in USD 257 will decide between Mark Burris and Virginia Warren in a race to determine who will fill the Board of Education seat vacated by Deanne Burris, Mark’s wife. Board members Don Snavely and Doug Dunlap filed for re-election and are unopposed. Jack McFadden was the only patron to file for Mary Apt’s seat in her district. Apt chose not to run again.
In Humboldt, City Council member Vada Aikins filed for re-election to represent Ward 2, position one. She will be opposed by Richard Weilert. Meanwhile, Joe Weiner, Brenda Clark and Sunny Shreeve filed to represent Ward 2, position two. They are seeking to replace Jerry Griffeth, who did not file for re-election. Iner “Nobby” Davis was the only candidate to file to replace outgoing mayor Bob Sharp. Wayne Carson is unopposed in his quest to retain his seat representing Ward 1, position 2. Nobody filed to fill the seat of Sean McReynolds, who is not seeking re-election.
LaHarpe will have six candidates to fill two slots on the LaHarpe City Council. The candidates are Ella Mae Crowell, Randy Crowell, Savannah Heard Flory, Ruth Jackson, Clayton Carr and Don F. Gay. Cynthia Carr filed for re-election as mayor, the only candidate for that seat.
Six candidates will fill four Humboldt USD 258 Board of Education seats, all of which are at large. Voters will choose from incumbents Curt Mueller, Sandy Whitaker, Joe Works and Helen Harrington, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Dan Weilert. Also in the running are Larry Mendoza and Dusty Bartlett.
Two contested races will be decided for the Marmaton Valley USD 256 Board of Education. Board member Amanda Allen is being challenged by James Smart to represent District 1. Kris Smith and Mark Spillman will face off to fill Patti Boyd’s at-large seat. Boyd did not file for re-election. Meanwhile, incumbent Judi Knight was the only candidate to file for her seat on the board. John Booth was the only candidate to file to replace Bob Rhodes on the board. Rhodes did not file for re-election.
Incumbents George Grisier and Larry Robertson both filed to keep their seats on the Gas City Council. They are unopposed. Jennifer McDermeit did not file for re-election, and nobody else filed.
In Moran, Mayor Phillip Merkel filed for re-election, as did City Council members Jim Mueller and Warren Johnson. All are unopposed.
Also unopposed in Savonburg are Mayor Vivian McMurray and City Council members Lon Hale, Glen Wolfe, Vern Cuppet and Janice Janssen. Incumbent Jerry Kauffman did not file for re-election.
None of the contested races warranted a primary election, which would have been March 1.
