Heavy trucks again have free rein to cross a railroad overpass along U.S. 54 between Iola and Yates Center.

Work to reinforce the overpass, which crosses the Union Pacific Railroad corridor about 1½ miles east of Yates Center, was completed recently by J&J Contractors, Iola.

In February, the Kansas Department of Transportation placed weight limits on the 76-year-old bridge, limiting access to many highway transports.

Crews installed cribbing beneath the span to restore full load capacity. Repairs cost $174,000.
