Gerald Rusche isn’t sure if it’s because an animal shelter is set to open in Allen County, or if it’s just that local residents have an affinity for animals.
Whatever the reason, Rusche, officer in charge at the Iola post office, marveled at the advanced interest in the post office’s next promotion, “Stamps To the Rescue.”
The stamps, which feature mug shots of dogs and cats, will be available starting Friday at post offices around the country.
To coincide with the launch, Halo, makers of natural pet food products, is distributing 1 million free meals to animal shelters across the country, Rusche said. More than 600,000 already have been delivered, according to the group’s Web site.
“This is unprecedented, the number of calls in advance we’ve received about the stamps,” Rusche said. “I’ve never seen anything like this on any of our other stamp promotions.”
Rusche noted the campaign coincides with the soon-to-open Allen County Animal Rescue Facility.
Ginny Hawk, ACARF board member, said organizers will begin interviewing applicants for the facility’s director position within the next few weeks.
“Whoever we hire will need to undergo some training,” Hawk said. “We’d like to open soon after that. We’ll still have to get some temporary cages in place.”
