The USD 257 Board of Education voted on Monday to accept the resignation, effective immediately, of longtime board member Darrel Catron. Catron had been frequently absent from the district’s bi-monthly meetings during the months leading up to the announcement. According to Superintendent of Schools Stacey Fager, the Gas resident tendered his resignation by letter last month.
The board has decided not to pursue a replacement during the interim, but will await the results of the Nov. 7 election, which pits LaHarpe resident Jennifer Coltrane against fellow townswoman Tracy R. Lee for the Position 6 seat. Coltrane has been a consistent spectator at school board meetings since January.

IOLA CODE OFFICER Gregg Hutton asked the district to grant temporary easements to the city in preparation for sidewalk repair to be completed at six locations around the district. The infrastructure improvements arrive thanks to a federally funded “Safe Routes to School” grant, which the city received last year. According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, the grant requires a 20 percent match, meaning the City of Iola is responsible for $36,000 of the $180,000 project. USD 257, which last night approved Hutton’s request, will not incur any costs for the project.
Hutton estimated that the surface repair work would be completed by the spring of 2018.
