Iolans soon will be asked to decide whether to voluntarily pay $2 a month to support Iolas parks, trails and recreational programs.
City Administrator Sid Fleming presented City Council members with a mock flyer that will be mailed to all utility customers to explain how the process will work.
The flyer will contain information on how the funds will be spent, while providing instructions for those who do not want to pay the monthly fee.
To opt out, customers would either fill out a form available at City Hall or via the citys website, sign it, and then send it to City Hall.
The key, Fleming said, was the city needed a signed form indicating a customers intention to opt out of the payments.
Council members asked if the process could be made more convenient for those wishing to be excluded, or if an opt-in process would be better for consumers.
Making the process opt-out rather than opt-in will bring in more revenue, Fleming explained.
If 75 percent of the customers add the $2 to their bills, the city would bring in more than $58,000 annually, vided Council members with a number of projects the city could target over the next four years with the funding, such as shelter roof replacement at Riverside Park, painting the Iola Municipal Pool and developing a parks, recreation and trail master plan.
