An Indiana family escaped injury early Sunday morning after striking a mailbox that had been stolen from a local residence and dumped onto U.S. 169 from a nearby overpass.
The driver, whose name was not released, was pulling a fifth-wheel camper behind his pickup when he struck the base of the mailbox — a concrete-filled milk can.
The impact destroyed the front tire to his pickup, but the driver was able to safely pull the vehicle to the side of the road.
The mailbox apparently came from a residence along Montana Road. The resident had been victimized before by vandals destroying the mailbox, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
A video of the incident’s aftermath is available on the ACSD and Iola Register Facebook pages.
Sheriff Bryan Murphy is eager to find the perpetrators.
Those with information regarding the crimes are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Department, 365-1400, or Allen County Crime Stoppers, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or download and use the Crime Stoppers P3 Tips App at www.p3tips.com.
Tipsters can remain anonymous and are eligible to receive a cash reward.
