The Iola Elks will once again cap Independence Day with a fireworks extravaganza Monday.

But folks needn’t wait until dusk to show up for the fun.

That starts much earlier.

The gates to Elks Lake open at 7:30 a.m. for registration for the annual Ed Hendrix Fishing Derby. Youngsters 16 and under are welcome, although all youth must be accompanied with an adult. Bait will be provided.

The fishing derby runs from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by a hot dog and hamburger lunch.

A land box turtle race gets underway at 12:30 p.m., followed at 1 o’clock by the carp fishing derby.

Kids games run from 1 to 3.

As the day turns into evening, live music will be provided until the fireworks show begins at about 9:30.

Attendees are encouraged to bring swimwear to cool off during the day in the Elks’ designated swimming area.
