LONDON — Roger Federer continued his trailblazing progress at Wimbledon Wednesday as he overwhelmed Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 to extend his campaign into the third round.

Centre Court was treated to another display of sensational serving and genius groundstrokes as Federer outmatched Lacko with some of his finest work.

“Sometimes your serve matches up better against certain players. There’s no doubt about that,” said the defending eight-time champion.

Federer unleashed a thunderous forehand to earn the first two break points of the match. Next, an uncontrolled effort from Lacko gave a 4-3 advantage to the 36-year-old Swiss.

Another effortless topspin-loaded swing from Federer, which claimed the opening break of the second set, was followed by a 60-second service game to pull away with a 4-2 lead.

“I think it is important that, when you want to serve well, your point-for-point mentality is right,” Federer said.

“The first point is as important as a breakpoint, so the concentration is the same.”

Federer was relentless as he lost just nine of 61 total points behind his intimidating service. He closed in for victory after securing the second set with three straight aces.

The third set was one-way traffic. Then Federer killed the contest with a ferocious forehand after 90 minutes of brilliance.

The women’s draw suffered another seed shock as No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki fell in three sets to Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

“I think I did everything I could,” Wozniacki said.

“I fought as hard as I could. I can’t even be mad at myself, because I played up to the level that I can. I think she played above her level and really raised it. She got a little lucky and played well when she needed to.”

Five of the top 10 women’s seeds have now failed to go beyond the second round at Wimbledon.

Serena Williams progressed into the third round with a dominant straight-set win over Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova.

The seven-time champion, who was controversially seeded at 25 following her lengthy absence as a new mother, claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win in 66 minutes on Centre Court.
