Graduation plans for two Allen County schools have been put on hold, again, as the state clarified its prohibition on such ceremonies.
Graduations are not allowed during Phase One of Gov. Laura Kelly’s plan to reopen the state because of the coronavirus pandemic. Phase Two begins May 18, but it was not immediately clear if graduations would be allowed at that time.
Some districts, though, had planned modified graduations that they believed were still allowed. They learned otherwise Thursday evening.
Iola High School and Marmaton Valley High School had scheduled limited ceremonies for May 16. Those events will be postponed.
USD 257 Superintendent Stacey Fager said the district had not yet decided when they would reschedule.
“Like every other school district, we’ve been adapting since spring break. This is just another situation we’ll have to adapt to,” Fager said. “It’s catching a lot of districts by surprise.”
At least 17 other high schools in Southeast Kansas had planned some sort of graduation event during the same time period.
The Humboldt school district had not yet made plans for its graduation ceremony, intending to schedule something in the summer. Humboldt High School’s original graduation ceremony was scheduled for today.
IHS originally had scheduled graduation for today, then rescheduled a walk-through ceremony for May 16, allowing just the senior and five family members.
Marmaton Valley’s graduation also had been scheduled for May 16, and was modified to a walk-through event for the senior and two family members.
