HUMBOLDT — After being shuttered briefly Monday for failing to pay back sales taxes, Barfoot Lumber is back in business.

Owner Kent Barfoot and the Kansas Department of Revenue both announced Wednesday afternoon that a payment plan has been reached, and the lumberyard’s assets released, allowing the business to reopen Wednesday morning.

Barfoot cited an ongoing economic slump as the impetus for much of the problems. Barfoot and brother Kirk owed a combined $45,000, he said.

The times have “made it difficult to pay as much or as quickly as KDOR wanted,” he said.

“The taxpayer and Kansas Department of Revenue were able to reach an acceptable payment arrangement (Tuesday) afternoon,” KDOR spokeswoman Jeannine Koranda announced in a press release.
