A round of overnight storms that wreaked havoc in Chanute and elsewhere across the region largely skirted Allen County.
Much of Chanute was without power into Wednesday morning after the storms brought ferocious winds that blew out several storefront windows downtown, removed a number of roofs and uprooted scores of trees.
Storm damage also was reported in Bronson.
Locally, Iola city officials reported the overnight rains brought .69 inches of moisture to Iola.
The storms accompanied a powerful cold front that sent temperatures plummeting in a matter of minutes.
At one point, just before 1 a.m., the temperature in Fort Scott was reported at 74. At the exact same time, it was 31 degrees cooler in Yates Center, which clocked in with a temp of 43.
The cold weather isn’t expected to stick around long, however, with temperatures forecast to rebound into the 60s by Friday and into the 70s and 80s next week, with little or no precipitation expected.
