Iolans delight Topeka crowd with a municipal band concert. The band last performed in front of the State Capitol in 1978.

TOPEKA — The Iola Municipal Band, at 155 years old, is the longest continuing municipal band west of the Mississippi River.

On Thursday, the ensemble was invited by Lt. David Toland to perform in the shadow of the State Capitol in Topeka.

Also on hand for the event was Iola Mayor Steve French, who narrated one of the songs.

The band is under the direction this year of Phil Becker.
