It was all too appropriate Thursday that the ribbon being cut at Iola’s Davis Soccer Fields was actually a roll of toilet paper, a light-hearted nod at one of the area’s most prominent improvements.

Permanent restroom facilities, often cited by families as one of the biggest needs for the soccer venue, are one of several improvements added for this year.

Crews also installed lights an irrigation system, and planted a new grass surface, currently rye, which will eventually give way to Bermuda grass within the next couple of years.

Marcia Davis, director of community engagement at Thrive Allen County, lauded the cooperation and teamwork between Dick’s Sporting Goods, which provided a $70,000 grant, and the City of Iola, which provided funding and labor to oversee the project.

“Partnering with each other is how we make improvements in our community,” Davis said.
