Who knew learning about safety could be so much fun?
The Allen County Multi-Agency Team is once again coordinating an assortment of activities for Family Safety Night Thursday evening on the courthouse square.
Several emergency groups will have booths set up to teach youngsters and their families about a wide variety of safety tips, from how to property call 911 to drug awareness.
The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. on the east side of the courthouse square, alongside the weekly Farmers Market.
Of note, the planned rebuild of U.S. 54 is also slated to start this week, although that will likely only affect parking, noted Marie Parker, one of several volunteers tasked with putting Family Safety Night together.
“There’s still plenty of parking along the side streets, so they may have to walk a bit farther if they don’t allow parking on Madison,” said Parker, who outside of Family Safety Night works with the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the 31st Judicial District.
On top of the educational information, ACMAT also will set up a number of bounce houses, while the Iola Fire Department will cap the festivities with a water drop at 7 p.m., spraying youngsters from atop their ladder truck.
Firefighters also will have their smoke house set up to simulate how families should respond if their homes catch fire.
The Kansas Highway Patrol will have its seat belt simulator on hand, the Allen County Sheriff’s Department will give away three bicycles, and the Iola Kiwanis Train will offer free rides.
Seventeen organizations will man the information booths along Jefferson Avenue.
