Iola High School freshmen received a lesson in career readiness and community involvement Wednesday morning during a presentation by Barbara Button, executive director of Humanity House.

Button outlined a series of sessions designed to introduce students to skills they will need as they move toward college and the workforce. Button said the program focuses on creating “win-wins” for situations such as job interviews, college applications and scholarship letters.

Button said the goal is to start the process early, introducing students at the outset of high school to opportunities within the community.

As part of the project, students will work in teams to create fundraising ideas for nonprofits such as Humanity House. The projects will be shared publicly, including on Humanity House’s Facebook page, and published in the Register. Button explained that the team that raises the most money for its nonprofit will be the winner.

The program is a multi-part effort, noted Button, and will consist of three classes followed by a fourth session in which students will present their nonprofit ideas. During that final class, the presentations will be reviewed, and guidance will be offered to help refine the projects.
