HUMBOLDT — By a 2-to-1 margin, USD 258 voters approved a $17.45 million school bond in a special election.
With fewer than 20% of voters taking advantage of the opportunity to weigh in, the vote was 255 in favor of the measure to 124 opposed. The district has 1,917 registered voters.
Updates and renovations will include replacing heating and cooling systems at the elementary and middle schools, new fire alarm systems throughout, creating a new drop-off lane at the elementary school, replacing the roof at the elementary school, replacing windows in all three schools, adding a cafeteria at the elementary school and replacing the elevator at the high school.
The measure will raise the property taxes on a $75,000 home by almost $10 a month. The bond issue is for 25 years.
The school board took preliminary steps toward the bond issue two years ago with an election scheduled for May 2020, but had to put their plans on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The district replaced its HVAC system in the meantime, something that had been included in the previous bond proposal.
