With at least three area crashes involving motorists colliding with bicycles in Allen County this month, Iola Police Chief Jared Warner hopes to remind folks of safety rules when it comes to two-wheelers.

The most recent accident occurred June 12 when a motorcyclist collided with Iolan Sofie Alexander as she was riding her bicycle near the Allen County Regional Airport on Minnesota Road.

Alexander was taken first to Allen County Regional Hospital, then to Saint Luke’s hospital in Kansas City for a fractured pelvis, sprained wrist and a concussion. She was dismissed from the Kansas City hospital Sunday.

Warner will discuss traffic laws and rules regarding bicycles, E-bikes and other types of small vehicles at Monday’s City Council meeting.

Additionally, Council members have been asked to gauge their interest in hosting bare knuckle fights locally.

Nothing has been proposed, notes economic development director Camille Lavon. Nor have any groups expressed an interest in an Iola event.

Rather, the Kansas Department of Commerce could provide contact information for interested communities, she said.

Lavon also will introduce Kailee Hansen, an Allen Community College student working as an intern with the economic development office.

Also on the agenda is further discussion of the U.S. 54 rebuild project through Iola.

The 6 p.m. meeting will be held at the New Community Building at Iola’s Riverside Park.

The public is invited.
