A 17-year-old Iola High School student died Thursday evening in what has been identified as a suicide.

Officials have not released the student’s name.

Stacey Fager, USD 257 Superintendent, said the district is working closely with Southeast Kansas Mental Health Center (SEKMHC) to support students and staff during this difficult time.

“We had resources and counselors available Friday morning,” noted Fager, adding that there continues to be an on-site therapist and case manager available to those in need.

Students are encouraged to reach out if they need help processing the loss or are experiencing emotional distress.
