YATES CENTER — Discussions on the fate of the Yates Center Police Department will continue when Yates Center City Council members gather for their regular meeting Monday.

The 7 p.m. meeting will be held at the Town Hall at 201 S. Main St., in order to handle a larger crowd than can be accommodated at City Hall.

The meeting comes after the Council voted, 3-2, Jan. 20 to greatly downsize the department, to a single police chief working 40 hours a week.

But the Council reversed course 24 hours later, and “quashed” the earlier motion with a 3-1 vote, with two of the members who favored the smaller force, Lyle Kee and Tammy Porter, absent from the special meeting.

Kee, who served as Yates Center’s police chief for 33 years, subsequently resigned from his Council seat.

Council members promised to bring the issue back up for discussion at Monday’s meeting. City Clerk Janet Thompson told the Register Police Chief Michael Strode — who was out of town for training and could not attend the prior two meetings — will be on hand to answer questions.

The public is invited.
