SALINA — Marmaton Valley High School’s forensics team capped its most successful year in recent memory Saturday with a pair of state titles and a second-place team finish.
Marmaton Valley’s Kailey Boyd had a hand in both championships.
She won for her humorous solo acting piece on “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculaton: Snow White” and her duet acting piece with Kaitlin Ensminger with “Snow White and the Seven Little Men.”
They beat out teammates Emily Boyd and Peyton Wilson, who finished second with their piece “Ruffled Feathers.”
Meanwhile, Jocelyn Miller took home third with her humorous solo acting piece, “Fat Kids On Fire.” Tapanga Turner took home third as well with her serious solo acting bit, “The Amish Project.”
“It was a remarkable day,” forensics team adviser Julie Tholen said. “The kids did wonderfully.”
Others making it to the semifinals, and thus placing in the top 12, were, Turner in poetry interpretation, Kaysha Elmenhorst in prose interpretation and informative speaking, Hanna Hoffman in informative speaking and Miller and Lauren Korte in duet acting.
“Our team’s success wasn’t just because of our champions,” Tholen said. “A lot of kids put in a tremendous amount of work to make this possible.”
The students have little time to rest on their laurels.
They will travel to Philadelphia May 23 for a national competition.
