The Iola Register won seven first-place awards Saturday in the annual Awards of Excellence competition for the Kansas Press Association.
The awards were evenly divided between the newspaper’s ediorial and advertising departments. The newspaper’s website, iolaregister.com, also won first place.
Among the winners, Sarah Stansbury, now an advertising representative, and formerly with graphic design, won three first-place awards for her designs for Shields Motors of Chanute, a political ad for Judy Brigham in her run for state representative, and for Bolling’s Meat Market.
As the Register’s sports editor, Richard Luken won first place for a photo taken at a Marmaton Valley football game.
Luken also won first place when earlier in the year he teamed up with Bob Johnson and former reporter Joe Sneve, to report on the arrest of Bill Farmer, an Iolan who in his efforts to summon help for neighbor Tim Emmons, rubbed police officers the wrong way.
Register staff garnered 12 second-place awards and eight third-place awards for their news and editorial writings, layout designs, and advertising promotions.
Judges for this year’s competition were from Wisconsin.
