Allen Community College President John Masterson spoke Monday at Iola’s Sorosis Club meeting at Mary Ann Magnuson Patterson’s home.

The college’s fall enrollment was 2,560, Masterson reported. Allen maintains the lowest mill levy among all Kansas community colleges in southeast Kansas.

The college is remodeling its cafeteria and meeting rooms. Master-son presented a drawing of the new addition, which should be complete by mid-December.

Allen has an outreach facility in Burlingame. Online courses are popular, as well, he said.

Masterson was introduced by Mary Kay Heard. Fifteen regular and four associate members attended the meeting. Ardith Harris and LaFern McDonald assisted Magnuson Patterson as co-hostesses.

Club members voted to donate $200 to the Friends of the Bowlus Fine Arts Center.

The club’s next meeting is at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 10 at Vicki Curry’s home.
