PITTSBURG — A 17-year-old was charged with first degree murder in the fatal shooting of Adam Basauri II, a senior attending Girard High School.
Bausari, 18, a football standout for the Girard Trojans, was headed to Pittsburg State University in the fall, according to the Pittsburg Morning Sun.
USD 248 Superintendent of Schools Todd Ferguson said, “We’re doing everything to take care of our USD 258 family as we move through this tragic time,” including providing counseling for grieving students and faculty.
Hundreds attended a candlelight vigil Wednesday night in honor of Bausari.
According to the Morning Sun, Basauri was shot at Schlanger Park in Pittsburg on the evening of Jan. 9. Police reported that at approximately 8:52 p.m. first responders were dispatched to the park, where they found Basauri had been shot and had died of his injuries.
According to witnesses, an altercation had taken place between Basauri and the suspect.
Less than an hour later, a 17-year-old suspect, who had fled the scene, was located in Arma by Crawford County Sheriff’s Office deputies, according to the police department.
The juvenile was arrested for second degree murder and was transported to the Southeast Kansas Regional Detention Center in Girard. The suspect also faces four counts of aggravated endangering a child and criminal use of a weapon.
