Susan Booth admits her sales pitch to son Logan could have used some polish.
“I said, ‘I’ll pay you half of what you’re making now, with no company truck, if you’ll come work with me,’” Susan recalled.
Logan, who for the past five years worked as a loan officer at Frontier Farm Credit in Parsons, nevertheless found the offer too tempting to resist.
Logan’s arrival earlier this year gives Iola-based McIntosh/Booth Insurance its third generation of insurance agents, under his mother, and her father and mentor, Gary McIntosh.
Like his mother, Logan specializes in both Medicare and health insurance.
“I’m really piggybacking off of her,” Logan said. “This is taking some burden off of her so she can focus on her educational seminars. It really relieves her time so she can get out and work with the community instead of being behind a computer all day long.”
Susan Booth is offering free weekly “Medicare Maintenance” chats in the McIntosh/Booth assembly room at 210 South St. at 10 a.m. each Tuesday through Dec. 6.
The informal discussions are geared for those seeking to re-enroll in Medicare plans.
“I’m not exaggerating when I get hundreds of calls from people who have questions about Medicare,” Susan said. “What am I missing out on? What does this mean? They just want clarity.
“People tell me they’ll get 10 calls from somebody trying to sell them something,” she continued. “I’d been wanting to do these educational seminars, but didn’t know how to do it because of the time.”
It was an offhand conversation about a year ago from his mother that piqued Logan’s interest.
“She just talked about how she needed to hire somebody, and asked if my brother or I would be interested,” Logan recalled.
After a few weeks of thought, he took his mother up on the offer.
Logan, who holds a degree in business administration and another related to plastics engineering at Pittsburg State University, admitted the insurance game is a bit different than farm loans.
“I had a bunch of federal regulations I needed to follow in the banking industry, so I figured this would be a breeze,” Logan chuckled. “No, this has way more rules and regulations, and everybody has a different situation. What works for this person may not work for this person. It’s been one big learning curve.”
It took about a month to earn his insurance licenses, to get certified by all of the insurance carriers through with McIntosh Booth works; and even more certification in order to handle Medicare plans.
