If weather cooperates, the Veterans Memorial Garden on the south courthouse lawn should be well along its way to completion for ceremonies to honor veterans Nov. 10.

Dirt work began this week. Alana Kinzle, who proposed the garden and raised funds, told commissioners Tuesday morning concrete work will be done soon and fall foliage planted. Other amenities will be added.

Commissioners said they would provide materials for a power outlet but its installation will be up to Iola. Assistant City Administrator Corey Schinstock said, “We’ll have to figure how to do it and then take it to the city council,” whose members will decide.

In a related matter, commissioners — less Bill King, who was unable to attend — approved use of restrooms in the courthouse during Veterans Day ceremonies on Nov. 10. An event at the Veterans Wall will start at 11 a.m., a parade will follow at noon. Commissioner Jerry Daniels agreed to pilot a helicopter flyover.

In other news, commissioners:

— Approved adding Woodson County to recipients of roll-over calls to Allen County’s 911 center when interruptions prevent local answers. Labette and Anderson counties were made part of the deal a week ago.

— Approved Humanity House staff to wrap courthouse lawn trees with lights for the Christmas season, a project that has been done here previously, as well as on Humboldt’s downtown square.
