A new video promoting Iola will debut at the 2010 Business EXPO next Friday evening. The 6:30 showing will be in the Little Theater of the Recreation Community Building in Riverside Park.
The video, replacing one made about 10 years ago, will be widely distributed, including through a YouTube link on the city’s Web site, www.cityofiola.com, and the Iola Area Chamber of Commerce Web site, iolachamber.org.
“We’re excited about the video,” said Judy Brigham, city administrator. “We think it will be a good tool to promote Iola.”
The City Involvement Task Force arranged production of the promotional film about 15 months ago after members watched such a presentation touting Independence.
“It was just terrific and we decided it was something we needed for Iola,” Brigham said. “We had the older one, but it was outdated in many respects.”
The new video focuses on Iola events, industries, businesses and amenities. “It also shows the Molly Trolley and views of our museums,” Brigham said. Its cost of slightly more than $2,800 was paid by the city.
Ian Coday, who grew up in Elsmore and has a video company, HWY Pictures, in Joplin, produced the 20-minute promotional tool.
“We’re very pleased with the way it turned out,” Brigham said. “Ian shot a lot of events throughout the past 14 or 15 months and there were a couple of things that had to be revised just recently because of changes that had occurred.”
In addition to the Internet, Brigham hopes to run the video periodically on city access channel 6 on Cox Cable. It will include it in packets the Chamber provides to business and industry prospects.
“We hope people will look at the video and think of Iola as ‘a town to come home to,’” Brigham said.

THOSE WHO watch the video’s debut will be asked for ideas on how to make it better, said Jana Taylor, Chamber director.
“Our idea is to build on the video and keep it updated,” Brigham explained.
The EXPO, with 43 booths in the building’s gymnasium area, will run from 5 to 9 Friday evening and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the next day.
“We scheduled the showing for 6:30 so people will have to time to get home from work and have dinner before coming to the EXPO,” Taylor said. “For those who are a little rushed, Iola Rotary Club members will serve meals at the EXPO Friday evening starting at 5 o’clock.”
On Saturday Allen County Hospital will host its annual health fair in the Little Theater from 8 a.m. until noon. A fashion show runs from 2 to 4 p.m.
