HUMBOLDT — A suspect is in custody after a fatal shooting in Humboldt Sunday afternoon.
Malachi Davis, 25, Humboldt, was arrested for suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of John P. Kent, 43, Humboldt, in the 1000 block of Sycamore Street, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
In a press release, the KBI said a female, Davis’s apparent girlfriend, was fleeing from a domestic incident and sought help at a neighbor’s house at about 5 p.m. Sunday.
The neighbor contacted Kent, who arrived at the scene and became involved in a verbal altercation with Davis, the KBI reported.
During the incident, Davis fired a single shot from his vehicle window, striking Kent in the chest. Kent was transported to Allen County Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Davis fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. He was arrested around 9 p.m. Sunday, along with two others, by the Kansas Highway Patrol south of Moran on U.S. 59.
The names of the two with Davis have not been released. It’s not immediately clear what charges, if any, they will face.
Personnel from the Humboldt Police Department, Allen County Sheriff’s Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks were on the scene.
Kansas Bureau of Investigation personnel were requested to administer the investigation.
“The combination of all of these agencies working together last night as one big team with their own separate duties is what should be accredited to how quickly everything culminated into an arrest and so many things being done at once,” Humboldt Police Chief Shannon Moore said in a press release. She also credited Allen County dispatchers for their roles in the resolution of the case. “This was teamwork at its finest.”
