Delbert L. Smith, 96, rural Neosho Falls, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at Windsor Place Nursing Center in Iola.
He was born Jan. 24, 1915, in Mapleton, the son of Willard L. and Bertha Mae (Delzell) Smith. He grew up in the Allen and Bourbon County areas.
On Dec. 24, 1938, Delbert married Bernice Peck in Erie, and they made their home on a farm north of LaHarpe until 1943 when they moved to their farm northeast of Neosho Falls. He lived on the farm 68 years. His wife preceded him in death on March 12, 2002.
Delbert enjoyed fishing, tending his cattle, watching wildlife and visiting with his neighbors.
He is surved by a daughter-in-law, Sharon Smith, Colony; a son, Donald “Pete” and his wife, Linda, rural Colony; a daugther, Cindy Smith Todd and her husband, Jay, Iola; three sisters, Rosalie Banta, Wichita, Clarabelle Sue Garrison, San Antonio, Texas, and Jean Jackson Fort Scott; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren (with two more on the way) and seven great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne, in 1996, a great-great-granddaugther, Ginnie Bertoncino, and three brothers, Dwight, Johnny and Bob.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola, with burial at Colony Cemetery. Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Allen County Historical Society or First Responders/Colony Fire Department and left with the funeral home.
